2007 Post-ADA Report

July 09, 2007

This year’s American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions took place in Chicago on June 22-26, 2007. Of particular interest were a panel discussion on Avandia, data on additional DPP-IV inhibitors, and preliminary data on drugs with a new mechanism of action, the sodium-glucose co-transporter SGLT2 inhibitors. The latter could become important treatment options, complementary to other drugs, though side effects, such as infections may be an issue. Longer-term data on Byetta and Exubera (pulmonary safety) were also released.

Amylin held an investor conference again this year. The discussion about its interesting obesity program was similar to last year, but we are now closer to seeing whether there is truth to its hypothesis that the hormone amylin can restore responsiveness to leptin, a drug for which there had been high hopes in obesity, but which failed when used alone. Results from a proof-of-concept study of pramlintide (an amylin analogue) plus leptin should be available the second half of the year.

The list of abstracts we have included in this report is not comprehensive, but includes the events that we at BioMedTracker consider to be particularly relevant. We have included any comments that we made for particular events. For others, we have just included the links to the events. More information may be added, as the online content from the conference becomes available.
