We have added Salix Pharmaceuticals (SLXP) to our evaluated company list. A specialty pharmaceutical company with a focus on gastrointestinal diseases, Salix markets several drugs for diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and ulcerative colitis along with a number of gastrointestinal products such as bowel cleansers and corticosteroid suppositories.

Salix has two important franchises in the pipeline: Xifaxan and Colazal/mesalamine. These were developed mostly in-house but the Company's current strategy for top-line growth is to acquire the rights to products that are either already approved or in late-stage clinical development. To that end, the Company has recently acquired the U.S. rights to several drugs that are either approved or for which approval is anticipated in the next several years.
