2008 Pre-ADA Report

May 30, 2008

The American Diabetes Association 68th Scientific Sessions will take place on June 6 through 10 in San Francisco, California.

A major point of focus should be the GLP-1 agonists, with data being presented for exenatide LAR’s Phase III study, numerous liraglutide studies, and earlier stage studies from a number of other drugs. Interesting points of comparison for this class are glycemic control, effect on weight, nausea, antibody formation, and ease of administration.

DPP-IV inhibition is another competitive space, though questions remain on how the FDA will resolve safety issues for drugs that demonstrate skin toxicity in primate studies.

Further data for the most advanced SGLT2 inhibitor, Dapagliflozin, will be presented that could help confirm the initial Phase II results.

Since obesity contributes to insulin resistance, diabetes is an increasing focus for obesity drugs, and new data or analyses for Qnexa, Contrave, and Zimulti will be presented. Similarly, since diabetics are at high risk for cardiovascular disease and tend to have lipid abnormalities, there are several subgroup analyses of diabetics from lipid studies.

The data are still embargoed, but we have highlighted what we think are the most interesting clinical studies. We have also included a list of other pertinent talks and posters.
