2009 Post-ASH Report

The 51st meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) was held in New Orleans, LA from December 5-8, 2009. This report will highlight a few central themes of the meeting including multiple myeloma, indolent non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, venous thromboembolism and myeloproliferative disorders. Many of the studies featured in this report will significantly impact their disease field and may alter the future of treatment guidelines.

Key highlights from the meeting include:

  • Identification of new front-line and maintenance therapy regimens in multiple myeloma
  • First effective monoclonal antibody in treating multiple myeloma
  • Treanda moving to surpass CHOP in combination with Rituxan for front-line indolent lymphoma
  • Supportive data in the treatment of VTEs for novel anticoagulants that do not require monitoring
  • Introduction of oral Jak inhibitors for treatment of myeloproliferative disorders
