New Evaluated Company - Gilead Sciences (GILD)
December 17, 2010
We have added Gilead Sciences to our evaluated company list. Founded in 1987,
Gilead is a leader in the research and development of antiviral drugs. Gilead is the
dominant force in human-immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment. Seventy-eight percent of
patients that are treated with antiretroviral treatment (ART) for HIV (~465,000 individuals) in
the United States receive a regimen containing at least one Gilead drug, including almost
90% of patients undergoing first-line treatment, according to the Synovate Healthcare U.S.
HIV Monitor. Additionally, Gilead has a robust pipeline of drugs in development including 11
drugs in Phase II development or later, including Rilpivirine/Truvada and Quad, another
single-tablet fixed-dose regimen containing elvitegravir, cobicistat and
Truvada
(emtricitabine/tenofovir). Both of these have the potential to be blockbuster drugs generating
billions for Gilead annually.
Nearly 90% of Gilead’s total revenues are brought in from its core products Atripla, Truvada, Viread, Hepsera and Emtriva. Gilead also receives royalty revenues from Roche on sales of Tamiflu, which saw increased sales from a strong influenza season last year. Gilead has seen revenue growth of nearly 30% annually, and through two quarters of 2010, Gilead is poised to break $8 billion in revenue for 2010, which translates into a 3-year compounded annual growth rate of 28.9%.
