2011 BioMedTracker Post-ASCO Report

July 11, 2011

The 2011 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) was held in Chicago, Illinois from June 3-7. The theme of “Patients, Pathways, Progress” highlighted the emerging focus on tailored treatments based on an understanding of the molecular pathways underlying the growth of different tumors in individual patients. Areas at the meeting generating excitement were prostate cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, myelofibrosis, and lung cancer.

In prostate cancer, the meeting was effectively the debut of newly-approved Zytiga (abiraterone, JNJ) which sparked much discussion on the future treatment paradigm for castrate-resistant prostate cancer. This meeting was also the ASCO debut of the melanoma drug, Yervoy (ipilimumab, BMY), as an approved therapy and vemurafenib (Roche) which could be approved soon for melanoma. Both INCB18424 (INCY) and CYT387 (YMI) headlined progress towards the first FDA-approved drug in myelofibrosis.

We have included a comprehensive list of oral and poster presentations that were added from the meeting as well as a list of large-impact and data catalysts that may occur before the end of 2011.
