2011 Post-AASLD/HCV Update Report
December 08, 2011
The 61st Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), also called the Liver Meeting, was held in San Francisco, CA, November 4 – November 8, 2011. Highlights include SVR and early stage results from clinical trials of novel interferon-free direct acting antiviral (DAA) combinations, quad combinations designed to provide a shorter therapy duration, second generation protease inhibitors, NS5A inhibitors, and nucleosides. Deep sequencing methods have been applied to better understand the nature and implications of resistance associated variations.
Most of the key developments that have occurred since our Pre-AASLD update have been in the rapidly developing area of interferon-free combinations of directly-acting antiviral drugs. This is a key area of interest due to the marginally acceptable side effect profile of interferon and the extended period to which patients are exposed to interferon in currently available treatment regimens. This report focuses on these developments, and offers our assessment of the potential of the many approaches being investigated.
