Citeline Pediatric Type 2 Diabetes Trials Report - Are We Content with the Bare Minimum?

May 14, 2014

Type 2 diabetes is a disease that has historically been associated with adults and used to be referred to as “adult-onset diabetes.” It was extremely uncommon for this disease to be detected in children or adolescents, but over the last twenty years in the United States, cases of type 2 diabetes have been steadily increasing in this patient population. In order to gain a better understanding of the incidence and prevalence of pediatric type 2 diabetes, as well as acquire the first national data, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiated the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study in 2000. This study will continue through at least 2015 and interim data has indicated that approximately 3,700 new cases of type 2 diabetes are diagnosed annually in youth under the age of 20 in the United States. This report leveraged Trialtrove, a Citeline product, to identify industry- sponsored type 2 diabetes trials to explore the key sponsors who enroll pediatric patients, these trial's locations, and whether or not these trials are post marketing requirements.
