Datamonitor Healthcare CV&Met: Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Disease Coverage
February 28, 2018
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) consists of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT refers to the formation of
thrombi or blood clots in deep veins, which can block blood flow. A PE can form if the clot or a fragment travels to the lung, blocking
oxygenated blood flow. VTE is estimated to be the third most common cardiovascular disease, and represents a significant financial burden
for healthcare systems. PE is estimated to be the leading cause of in-hospital mortality, accounting for approximately 10% of deaths in this
setting.
