Renal cell
carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney
cancer. It accounts for more than 90% of malignant
kidney tumors. Renal cell cancer (also called
kidney cancer or renal adenocarcinoma) is a
disease in which malignant (cancer) cells are
found in the lining of tubules (very small tubes)
in the kidney. The tiny tubules in the kidneys
filter and clean the blood, taking out waste
products and making urine.
Renal cell carcinoma accounts for approximately
3% of adult malignancies. The age-adjusted
incidence of renal cell carcinoma has been rising
by 3% per year. Approximately 31,200 new cases of
RCC were diagnosed in the year 2000, and more than
11,900 affected individuals died. RCC is
characterized by a lack of early warning signs,
diverse clinical manifestations, resistance to
radiation and chemotherapy, and infrequent but
reproducible responses to immunotherapy agents
such as interferon alpha and interleukin (IL)-2.
There are 5 main types of renal cell carcinoma
that are identified by examining the tumor under a
microscope: clear cell, papillary, chromophobe,
collecting duct, and "unclassified."
