Datamonitor Healthcare Infectious Diseases: Norovirus Market Spotlight

November 15, 2024

Norovirus is an RNA virus of the Caliciviridae family, and a human enteric pathogen that causes inflammation of the intestines and/or stomach, known as acute gastroenteritis. Human noroviruses are the principal cause of pandemic gastroenteritis in people of all age groups. Norovirus affects individuals of all ages; however, the majority of mortality and morbidity happens at the extremes of age. The symptoms of norovirus infection usually develop 12–48 hours after exposure to the virus. The most common symptoms include vomiting, stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea. Some individuals may also have headaches, low-grade fever, and body aches. The most common complication of norovirus, which may require medical care, is dehydration. This occurs particularly in young children, individuals with other illnesses, and the elderly. Gastroenteritis symptoms generally last for 24–72 hours, and patients generally recover completely from the infection without any severe long-term problems. However, in some cases, illness due to norovirus can be severe, particularly in older adults, immunocompromised individuals, and young children. This can cause serious dehydration, hospitalization, and death.
