Datamonitor Healthcare Oncology: Biliary Tract Cancer Market Spotlight

January 29, 2024

Biliary tract cancer (BTC), also known as cholangiocarcinoma or bile duct adenocarcinoma, is a cancer that originates from the cells which line the bile duct. These are a group of rare and heterogeneous malignancies with poor prognosis. BTCs are genetically and clinically divergent.

Patients may not experience any symptoms, particularly when BTC is at an initial stage. Sometimes, BTCs are diagnosed accidentally when an MRI or CT scan is done for other reasons, or during the removal of the gallbladder due to symptomatic gallstones. Patients may experience non-specific symptoms including abdominal pain, weight loss, night sweats, fevers, and fatigue. Patients with gallbladder cancers or perihilar or distal cholangiocarcinomas more frequently develop jaundice as their lymph nodes or a tumor block a major bile duct.
