Psychedelic Symposium 2024

November 20, 2024

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Transdisciplinary Center for Research in Psychoactive Substances held the fourth annual Psychedelic Symposium on Nov. 7–8, 2024. This symposium took place just two days after the US presidential election, and it should be understood that all presented information surrounding the logistics and legal paths of psychedelic research and practice may be affected by the results of this election.

Experts from across the US covered myriad topics related to psychedelic research, including:

  • preclinical and clinical science
  • the role of psychotherapy and the therapist
  • access, legislation and credentialing
  • psychedelic humanities

These experts brought perspectives from academia, industry, regulatory and in between, highlighting the importance of a multi-pronged approach to a science that is so deeply entwined with historical inequity and social justice. There was an emphasis on appreciating the underground research and indigenous practices that have served as a jumping-off point for so much of modern psychedelic science, while also affirming the ongoing need for well-designed trials and thorough safety analyses to better characterize the potential that psychedelic drugs have in the treatment of multiple psychiatry and neurology disorders.
