Datamonitor Healthcare I&I: Osteoarthritis and Osteoarthritis Pain Market Spotlight

April 03, 2024

Osteoarthritis is a condition characterized by focal areas of loss of articular cartilage within the synovial joints. This is associated with thickening of the capsule and hypertrophy of the bone. Osteoarthritis can be subclassified as either primary or secondary. Primary, or idiopathic, osteoarthritis refers to cases where the disease occurrence is not related to any prior condition or event affecting that joint. Alternatively, where the disease occurs in joints that have previously experienced trauma, pre-existing disease, or deformity, it is referred to as secondary osteoarthritis. Common causes of secondary osteoarthritis include fractures, infectious arthritis, congenital disorders, and metabolic disorders.
