January 17, 2024
Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disease caused by an intolerance to gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. In such individuals, the intake of gluten-containing food (wheat and rye) produces a flat jejunal mucosa with infiltration of the lymphocytes. Celiac disease patients present with immune-mediated enteropathy, which leads to malabsorption and maldigestion. The exact cause of the disease is unknown; however, it is often inherited, and is considered to be primarily immune-mediated. The autoantigen tissue transglutaminase has a significant role in the pathogenesis of the disease. In celiac disease, genetic susceptibility factors include presence of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II genes HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8, which are responsible for presenting antigens to the immune cells.
