Zika virus is caused by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which can also transmit dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever. The virus belongs to the genus Flavivirus of the family Flaviviridae. Other flaviviruses which are related to Zika include yellow fever virus, dengue virus, Japanese encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, Spondweni virus, and tick-borne encephalitis virus. Three lineages of Zika virus have been identified, namely East African, West African, and Asian. The most recent major outbreak was clustered mostly around the Asian lineage.
