Acne is a dermatological disorder which generally affects an individual during adolescence, but may affect individuals of all ages. The prevalence of acne in adults is increasing, especially in women aged >25 years. While acne affects nearly 81–95% of adolescent boys and 79–82% of adolescent girls, the prevalence of acne in adult men and women is approximately 3% and 12%, respectively. There is a significant financial burden associated with acne. Furthermore, patients with acne undergo considerable psychological distress. Patients with acne have been reported to have a greater prevalence of anxiety and depression, along with suicidal ideation.
